Off-duty cop shoots person in car at Fermilab

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office says an off-duty police officer shot a person in a parking lot on Fermilab’s property.

The shooting happened Saturday morning on the grounds in Batavia.

In a release, sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Domrose says the officer witnessed a hit-and-run accident and followed the driver in a personal vehicle. Authorities say the officer allegedly confronted the occupants of the vehicle in a parking lot at Fermilab and fired shots.

A person sitting in the vehicle was struck and transported to a Geneva hospital.

No charges have been filed.

A Fermilab spokesman says no employees or visiting scientists were involved in the incident.

No further details were immediately available.
