The Chicago City Council’s once-a-decade ward remap may have claimed its first political casualty.
Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey, whose district stretches across the city’s Northwest Side, says he dropped his bid for 32nd Ward Democratic Committeeman after taking a hard look at the new map.
“With my present residence barely in the new ward boundaries and my office now located in the newly created 2nd Ward, I came to realize that . . . it is simply not practical for me to commit to continuing to be a resident of the 32nd Ward for the four-year term that my re-election as Democratic committeeman would require,” Fritchey says.
That clears the way for Fritchey’s opponent — ally-turned-opponent — Ald. Scott Waguespack to grab the unpaid political job of committeeman, giving him a vote and a voice in slating Democratic candidates in local political races.
Waguespack says he was “very surprised” to hear Fritchey had shelved his bid for the seat.
