Grandmother dies after blaze that killed boy, 7

Updated: March 14, 2012 8:17AM

The grandmother of a 7-year-old boy killed in a Roseland house fire died Sunday from injuries apparently received in the weekend blaze.

Firefighters responded around 9:45 a.m. Saturday to a house in the 10700 block of South Prairie and found 61-year-old Barbara Scott unresponsive on the first floor with severe smoke inhalation, officials said.

She was initially taken to Roseland Community Hospital and later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, the fire department said.

Scott, of the 1400 block of East 74th, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:11 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Hours after the fire, investigators found Omariontae Tucker in the crawl space of the unfinished attic next to a dog, fire officials said.

A Sunday autopsy determined Tucker died from carbon monoxide intoxication and inhalation of smoke and soot from a house fire, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled the death an accident. An autopsy on Scott is scheduled for Monday.

The boy lived with his mother and grandmother in the home, relatives said.
