ComEd on Sunday unveiled its state-of-the-art Mobile Command Center designed to better deal with the aftermath of severe storms — like the ones that knocked out power to a record 3 million customers between June and August of last year.
The command center is housed inside a trailer that will be towed into hard-hit areas and allow ComEd officials to better coordinate with its workers, local authorities and customers throughout Northern Illinois.
Previously, the emergency command center was run out of a ComEd facility in Joliet.
The $1 million trailer is satellite-equipped and outfitted with seven flat-screen monitors that spit out real-time information. It seats 30 people and has its own kitchenette.
ComEd officials touted the new trailer in the parking lot of the Oak Park Police station Sunday — and announced an iPhone application connecting customers with outage information should be available this summer.
