A purported gang member who allegedly gunned down a 15-year-old boy as he helped his mother unload groceries outside their West Side home was ordered held without bail Friday.
At the time of the Sept. 25 shooting, a police source said, authorities did not believe Antonio Johnson and his mother, Annette Johnson, were the intended targets.
But minutes before shots were fired, a passenger in Keith Talbert’s light-colored Cadillac gestured toward Antonio’s older brother as they drove by the residence in the 700 block of North Springfield, assistant Cook County state’s attorney Krystyn Dilillo said.
Talbert drove off only to return a short time later and shouted in the family’s direction before firing his handgun, Dilillo said.
Antonio, a student at Marshall Metro High School, was shot in the head.
Annette Johnson, 37, suffered a gunshot wound to her right arm. Antonio’s 22-year-old brother was not injured.
He and Johnson identified Talbert, 26, as the shooter, prosecutors said.
But Talbert, who lives just a few blocks from the family, couldn’t be found until this week when he turned up in Wisconsin, Dilillo said.
Antonio was “all about business and his academics,” said his former dean, Derrick Bass said. “He was a very good student who hung out with a good crowd of kids and flew under the radar.”
