SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE February 9, 2012 8:24AM
A man was killed and two others were critically hurt early Thursday in a crash on the border of southwest suburban Summit and Chicago.
The accident happened at 63rd Street and Harlem Avenue about 3:23 a.m., when a man ran a red light and struck another vehicle in the intersection, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
The man was dead at the scene and two other men were injured, she said.
They were taken in critical condition, one to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and the other to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Summit Fire Lt. Eric Antrobus said. A third man refused treatment.
The man killed was alone and the three others were in the other vehicle, Antrobus said.
Harlem Avenue is the border between Summit and Chicago so though the Summit Fire Department responded, the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Unit is investigating, Greer said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed a 38-year-old man was killed in the crash and that he was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 3:56 a.m.. His identity is not being released early Thursday pending family notification.
CTA buses running along West 63rd Street are being rerouted Thursday morning as police continue to investigate.
