Corn Boil missing just one thing: corn

Later this month, thousands will descend on the 41st annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil to sink their teeth into a few juicy golden ears. But one ingredient is still missing for this year's fest: the corn.

U.S. Foodservice, which has provided the Corn Boil's food for the past five years, is citing the recent bad weather for the delay in naming a price for corn, Corn Boil Committee Chairman Kim Plumb said.

The company also hasn't been able to specify where it will get the 10,000 ears needed for the festival.

"When I talked to [the former chairman], he said, 'They haven't gotten to you yet on the price of the corn?' " said Plumb, who is chairing the committee for the first time this year.

Last year, the Corn Boil spent $9,000 on 13,000 ears of corn for the festival, Plumb said, which turned out to be a little more than needed. Organizers plan to scale back their purchase slightly this year to 10,000 ears, but with rising food costs, the purchase could wind up costing just as much.

Despite increases in supply costs, festivalgoers will still be plunkingdown just $1 per ear of corn, Plumb said.
