Pedestrian killed in Mount Prospect collision

(MOUNT PROSPECT) A 19-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle Tuesday night after apparently walking into traffic in northwest suburban Mount Prospect.

Matthew Svedman, 19, was found lying in the southbound lanes of Rand Road south of Prospect Manor Avenue when police and fire department officials responded about 8:30 p.m., according to a release from Mount Prospect police.

Emergency crews started life-saving measures and transported him to Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights, the release said.

Svedman, of the 700 block of North Elmhurst Avenue in Mount Prospect, was pronounced dead there at 9:16 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Witnesses told police he stepped into the roadway just before he was struck by the southbound vehicle, the release said.

The 56-year-old woman driving the vehicle was not injured, the release said. There were no passengers with her.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash early Wednesday. Any witnesses or anyone with additional information is asked to contact the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team at (847) 870-5656.
