Volo man killed in snowmobile crash

A north suburban man died Friday night after crashing a snowmobile in a Wauconda forest preserve.

The 39-year-old Volo resident was snowmobiling off a marked trail in the Lakewood Forest Preserve when he struck a cable gate about 9:50 p.m. near North Fairfield and North Gossell roads, according to a statement from John Tannahill, Lake County Forest Preserves Chief of Ranger police.

The man was wearing a helmet when the snowmobile struck the gate, the statement said.

Wauconda Fire District paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the man died on the scene, authorities said.

Lake County Forest Preserve Ranger police, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources police and Wauconda police all responded to the incident, which remains under investigation Saturday afternoon by police from the IDNR and county forest preserve.
