Man, 70, dies in Uptown blaze

A 79-year-old man died following an apartment fire Thursday night in the North Side Uptown neighborhood.

The fire, contained to a single room according to Fire Media Affairs, happened in an apartment in the 4600 block of North Beacon Street. The blaze was reported about 9:14 p.m., according to Fire Media.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating the death of the 79-year-old man found unresponsive at the scene, police News Affairs Hector Alfaro said.

Edward Fitzsimmons, 79, of the 4600 block of North Beacon Street, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
