The Northern Illinois University classroom building where a gunman killed five students in 2008 has reopened after $6 million in state-funded renovations. Cole Hall reopened Tuesday with a sun-lit lobby, marble benches and a view of the center of the DeKalb campus. A high-tech classroom in the building has four dozen computer stations. The school’s Anthropology Museum has customized exhibit space and the four-decade-old lecture hall has been overhauled with better technology. On Feb. 14, 2008, a former NIU student stepped onto a lecture stage during a geology class in Cole Hall and began shooting. Five students were killed and many injured. NIU provost Raymond Alden says the renovated Cole Hall is “a testament” to the school’s resolve and symbol of the future.
