TAMPA, Fla. — He made their night.
But Hollywood superstar Clint Eastwood made the Republican delegates work for it.
“OK, you want to make my day? I’ll start it. You finish it.
“Go ahead,” Eastwood began.
“Make my day,” the crowd roared back.
The conservative actor gave the Republican National Convention the star power it was looking for, taking to the podium on its final night to boost Mitt Romney and bash President Barack Obama.
The night’s “mystery” guest, Eastwood was greeted with thunderous applause.
“Save a little for Mitt,” he told the delegates.
Eastwood assured Republicans that while Hollywood stars are known for being “left of Lenin,” there are plenty of conservatives like him and actor Jon Voight out there as well.
Occasionally muffing his lines, the 82-year-old Oscar winner went after the incumbent president by having a conversation with an imaginary Obama sitting next to him.
“I’m not going to shut up,” he told the imaginary president as he skewered the Democrat’s record.
But Eastwood saved his choicest barb for Vice President Joe Biden.
“We all know Biden is the intellect of the Democratic Party,” Eastwood said. “Kind of a grin with a body behind it.”
Talking to the crowd, Eastwood said:
“You, we, we own this country,” the actor and director said. “We own it. ... Politicians are employees of ours. When somebody does not do the job, we got to let ‘em go, OK? Just remember that.”
