Declare war to stop babies from dying

Updated: April 15, 2013 11:18AM

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

The solution is not complex. Our current state is one of chaos — of murderous bloodstained, streets filled with heartless sons who gun down even 6-month-old infant girls. But it is solvable.

We are at war. It is not at its core a natural war but a spiritual one. A war against good waged by raw evil.

It is the spirit of Cain: Envious. Rebellious. Murderous. Avaricious. It is insatiable in its thirst for a brother’s blood — like the biblically recorded first homicide by Cain of his brother Abel, slain in a field, his blood soon crying out from the grave.

Does the blood of Jonylah Watkins also not cry out? And who will hear besides her Creator? For the spirit of Cain now reigns.

It is steady in stalking for revenge and imposes upon African-American neighborhoods a reign of terror greater than that of the Ku Klux Klan. It is merciless in imposing heartache and death. Dauntless in determination to steal, kill and destroy.

It is the full-grown seed of a generation of OGs (original gangstas) who once envisioned lucrative criminal empires sown in destruction.

It is a ravenous spirit, one that spits in the face of good, humanity and life, at societal order and our pursuit of happiness. All the while it blames others for its state of discontentment, rage and disregard.

“They wouldn’t shoot if they had jobs,” some say.

“It’s the system.” “It’s racism.”

“It’s a conspiracy.” “It’s ‘the man’.”

All may have their effect in helping to create this homicidal plague.

But YOU are the man — O young black man — who shoots little girls and boys dead. The gunman who springs from shadowy gangways, or who stands over a pregnant mother and pumps her with bullets as she pleads for her life — making her unborn son a victim of black-on-black crime before taking his first breath.

You are the man — O preacher — who sits silently impotent. Who stands visionless for the true health, hope and future of the community beyond the erecting of some grand new worship center. It is you who consumes tithes and offerings while the people perish.

You are the man — O politician — who has pimped the poor and sold your voice and soul, even to the detriment of your own people for a few dollars more.

We are “the man” — O fathers — who have deserted our sons and daughters. The men who allow the streets and gangs, and “the system,” “racism,” or the so-called “conspiracy” to consume our children whole without our paternal guidance, protection and nurturing that would give them — and also our communities — a fighting chance.

And we are the men who do nothing while this spirit in the persona of black and brown young men wages a war sent from hell.

The answer isn’t complex. We must also declare war — in the natural, and in the spiritual. So, Mr. Mayor and Mr. Police Superintendent, if these gangs won’t put down their guns, go and get them — by any means necessary. Parents, no child is born a killer. Raise your sons. Politicians step up or sit down and shut up.

And let the real church lead the way toward internal change — toward healing.

The blood of our brothers — and our babies — cries out from their graves.
