W OW! AFTER enjoying a long, relaxing and contemplative vacation a k a
staycation, I am back on my beat, but I also made a decision to retire myself and my pride and joy — Stella’s Column — after 43 years of gracing the hallways of the fabulous Sun-Times. My last day at the paper is Aug. 6, which just happens to be this sista’s birthday. So stay tuned my sweet and devoted readers, you have to still put up with me until then, but just know how much I love and appreciate every one of you.
KUDOS to my Sun-Times colleague Mary Mitchell for her July 19 article “The Nation Steps In” in which she wrote about the Honorable Louis Farrakhan and hundreds of his Nation of Islam/Fruit of Islam “well-dressed, well-spoken black men in suits,” stepping into and marching in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood last week, which is one of many violence- plagued communities in Chicago. The always respectful hat and bow tie-wearing Muslim men are seeking to deter brothers and sisters from killing and harming each other. I always said, whether you agree with his teachings or not, all people should want senseless violence to stop. I have long been writing about kids killing kids (KKK) and hoping for a miracle.
They also should be permitted to go into the jails and speak, just like in Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” movie. The film told the story of Malcolm X’s (portrayed by Denzel Washington) rise from pimp to historic Muslim leader thanks to his studying the faith while incarcerated. It is a fact that those inmates when released from prison have a lower rate of recidivism. And I’m happy that Police Supt. Garry McCarthy is supporting this effort.
PRESIDENT Barack Obama’s 51st birthday is Aug., 4 and a post-birthday fund-raiser party will be hosted by Michelle Aug. 12 at their well-guarded Kenwood home.
Obama flew to Colorado to speak out against the senseless shooting massacre caused by a crazed gunman in a theater that left 12 dead and many wounded. That was so thoughtful and caring of him ... and I hope he will do the same here.
Yeah, I said it!
THE TALENTED Steve Harvey, whose new talk show premieres here Sept. 4 on NBC5, is throwing out the first pitch on July 29 at Wrigley Field....Raw foodie queen Karyn Calabrese was happy when Lady Gaga and her entourage, including bodyguards, stopped by her famous Karyn’s Cooked raw food restaurant on Wells and later ordered vegan food to go from her Karyn’s On Green location.
BIRTHDAYS: Phil Teinowitz, Tom Baur and Woody Harrelson.
