I T WAS A SAD DAY Tuesday when I got word that prominent attorney/civic leader Philip H. Corboy, 87, founder of the prestigious Corboy & Demetrio law firm, had passed away because of natural causes. Corboy was a mainstay in my boss, the late Irv “Kup” Kupcinet’s, column. His many stellar accomplishments were documented, such as his awards and record-breaking multi-million-dollar injury cases. He also was cited for his philanthropy and speeches at various charitable events.

It was always a treat talking to Mr. Corboy, who was the nicest and classiest guy you could ever meet. That is probably why his wife, former Library Commissioner Mary Dempsey, fell so hard for him and has been at his side for the past 19 years.

Corboy also was part of the team of civic leaders that established the Irv Kupcinet Scholarship Fund in Broadcasting and Journalism at Columbia College Chicago in 2002 on Kup’s 90th birthday.

My condolences to his son, Philip “Flip” Corboy Jr., and the rest of the family and just know he was one of the best legal eagles of them all and now he has his real wings! R.I.P.
