Obama on O'Reilly

September 5, 2008

Barack Obama told conservative TV host Bill O'Reilly on Thursday that the surge of U.S. troops in Iraq has ''succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.''

But Obama, who opposed the 2007 escalation of forces, said Iraq still has failed to achieve the political reconciliation and self-sufficiency that is required.

He vowed to withdraw American troops and end the war.

Republicans repeatedly have accused Obama of denying military progress and wanting to pull out when victory is within reach. AP
