We have lost what has made us great in the past. With an ever-growing trade deficit to China, we must build a better balance between manufacturing, service oriented firms and improved protection of intellectual properties so that we can grow and harbor more American jobs. We must look to become more self sufficient in our energy production and green technologies. It does not make economic sense to continue sending jobs and billions of dollars overseas.

Peloquin

Small Business is not allowed to grow and prosper. We need to allow small business's to begin to flourish in the markets of today. Vertical farming, green energy sources and transportation development.

Tillman

Banks are not lending money to businesses therefore employers are not hiring . Resolution to this problem would be give tax breaks to businesses that hire new 3 or more workers causing the business to receive tax credits of their hire.

Should revenue increases, in the form of new taxes, higher taxes or more broadly imposed taxes, be part of the solution to crafting a more balanced federal budget and reducing the national debt?

I believe that we cannot just sign a blanket statement of this nature. We must look at ways that we can all come together with the understanding that true leadership means to put our communities and our nations best interests first. Not one man's idea of what he believes is needed, which has caused fear and gridlock in Washington.

Peloquin

No, I would need to see the proposal and what it entails before I can make a decision on a vote.

These programs were formed to help Americans avoid falling into a third world situation of poverty and neglect. When these were created, the overall life expectancy was age 67. With the improvement of healthcare, we are now living into our late 80's and 90's with even more people now living to over 100 years of age. We can no longer continue the status quo. If our children and their children wish to have the same security, we must look at better ways to insure that these programs are around for future generations. Robbing our current senior citizens of what they were promised is not the answer, as they made choices based on these commitments. However, our next generations should be a creative part of the problem-solving process going into the future.

Peloquin

Elected officials need to start to do what is right for the American people and not what is right for the political parties.

Tillman

I would compromise only if my decision effects or will effects the Afro-American community as a whole. I will consider it.

I believe we can save Social Security with a few common sense reforms. As I stated in the previous answer, there should be no change for retirees or those near retirement – none. However, for the next generation of retirees, we should slowly raise the retirement age along with slowing the growth of benefits for those with higher incomes.”

Ideal for Medicaid is block-granting it back to the states - which has, in a short period of time, evolved into the consensus conservative position on the issue. I believe that's a solid direction. Block-granting Medicaid will unleash a policy revolution in government-delivered health care, similar to that unleashed by the 1996 welfare reforms, as individual states experiment with more-efficient ways to fix the humanitarian catastrophe that is Medicaid today.

Interestingly, I would propose capping Medicaid growth to CPI plus one percent, which even less than that is proposed by Paul Ryan in the Path to Prosperity (CPI plus population growth).

Yes there is, the gap come from a two-fold problem. First, the lack of a growing middle class due to the major reduction in manufacturing jobs that have been replaced with low paying service-oriented jobs. Second, the decreasing access for workers to advance and achieve a college education. Increased education counseling and opportunities would allow greater direction and avenues for positive direction and earning a higher income over the course of their lifetime.

The real question is - who is not to blame for this debacle? I believe that it started with the current elected officials who where bought by the banking lobbyists. Lobbyists acted on behalf of their clients - banks and investment firms - whose tunnel vision of greed and multi million dollar bonuses corrupted our financial security and have left Americans holding the bag, footing the bill for hundreds of billions of dollars. This has cost Americans their peace of mind and the security of a robust economy.

Peloquin

All of us.

The 700 billion dollars that we gave to the banks (due to their own fault and greed) could provide the resources to implement the result of legislation that would allow a person whose home is now valued less than their original mortgage to have a one time revision to the current assessed value - allowing the homeowner to keep their property. Widespread, this would allow the communities resources to avoid the collapse and bankruptcy of municipalities. If we do nothing, the American dream of home ownership will become a nightmare and our valuable communities will have lost not just their money but their heart, soul and visions of a better and promising tomorrow.

Peloquin

We need to work with local mgoverment enities to figure out ways of gettinf people back to work and allow them to stay in their homes.

Tillman

Have the banking industry along with mortgage industry remodify the consumer loans .

I believe it is real and that we part of the problem. We must work at reducing our carbon footprint by stimulating better policies here at home. It is vital that we collaborate with world leaders to create a better understanding of what is needed for the future of our shared planet, developing a better world for all.

The government must use their bully pulpit to increase our abilities to become a world leader in green alternatives - using the abundant natural gas reserves we hold, wind and solar farms. New nuclear plants should come on-line in combination with better technology for clean coal plants along with the increase of bio fuel alternatives and electric vehicles. This will help cut our addiction to oil and insure our national security so that we become more independent from oversea energy suppliers.

Peloquin

We need to allow the private sector to bring the technology to the forefront and allow local muncilpalities to part of that process. Vertical farming, solar power, wind power, bio-disesel, converting waste products into new energy possibities.

Tillman

The government can provide grants to educational institutions such as junior and Technical colleges to promote green alternatives for the 21st century. Also give tax incentives for companies that producing these green alternatives in America.

It has been effective in the capture of key combatants and the death of Osama Bin Laden.

The right course in America is to stand up to Iran with crippling economic sanctions and indict Ahmadinejad for violating the Geneva -- or the Genocide Convention. I am aware that this might make gasoline more expensive in the short term. But low gasoline prices are not worth an Iranian nuclear weapon. Our right course for Israel is to show that we care about Israel, that they are our friends and that we will loyally support them.

As a congressman I would stand with my commander in chief to authorize a credible threat of military action, and made it very clear that the United States of America is willing to take military action to keep Iran from having a nuclear weapon. If we do not stand up to bullies like Iran, they will have no fear – and will have a nuclear weapon.
We cannot risk Iran having the ability to threaten the safety and lives of our citizens and allies.

Peloquin

Yes

Tillman

I prefer to use diplomacy than sanctions or military interventions against Iran. Yes , Iran should be stopped through diplomatic means.

Until I have the ability to study the true situation in any United States military conflict by first hand congressional experience, it would be irresponsible for me to make any such statement. We must respect the investments the US has made in lives and resources for the past ten years. Situations in the Middle East become like chess and domino games. It was not black and white in Iraq (we are just now beginning to experience the results of that withdrawal) nor will it be in Afghanistan. My plan is that when I take office in D.C, I will tirelessly examine the situation and make the best possible decision for our citizens.

Much like the Departments of Military and Corrections, the world of academia (Education) is a unique community. Many of my family and friends are teachers. They are dedicated, unbelievably hard working and want only to best prepare our youth for the opportunities and choices ahead of them. However, educators are also human. Any initiative that becomes available to improve resources for our students I will wholeheartedly support with the caveat that we must provide the tools along with the mandates to effectively implement the programs. Funds spent in education will show significant ROI, both in our country's economy and reduced juvenile delinquency.
