Mayoral candidate Gery Chico says he wants to bring the Super Bowl to Chicago, possibly as early as 2015.
Chico says hosting the country’s most-watched sporting event would bring new jobs and millions of dollars in revenue to the city.
“As a concept, we should get into it and look at it, because Chicago deserves to be a Super Bowl city,” Chico said Saturday.
Soldier Field is 8,500 seats short of meeting the National Football League’s 70,000-seat minimum requirement to host a Super Bowl. Chico said he would work with the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Park District to determine the feasibility of adding seats.
The NFL recently eased a rule barring cold-weather cities.
“If New York can do it, Chicago can do it,” Chico said, referring to the New York Jets’ and Giants’ stadium being chosen for the 2014 Super Bowl.
