Sneed hears U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who continues to undergo treatment for depression and bipolar disorder while dealing with a federal probe of possible campaign fund misuse, has told friends he is still reeling from the news that two people he befriended while in treatment at a Tucson facility and at Mayo Clinic subsequently took their lives.

“He said they just couldn’t climb out of the hole,” a source said.

The Romney Menu...

A twit bit: Mitt Romney’s body man, Garrett Jackson, posted on Twitter what he thought was a poignant photo of a final moment on the Romney campaign: The GOP presidential candidate eating his favorite peanut butter and honey sandwich aboard the Air Romney plane. ◆Pix Nix: No, he did not post a pic of Romney ironing his shirt.

Shave ‘em...

Election protection: At last peek, Obama’s Press Secretary Jay Carney and speechwriter Jon Favreau have shaved off the facial scruff they were growing for good luck.

Storm Warnings...

What gives? Sneed has learned 50 cops, a combo of Illinois State police and local police from Central Illinois, will ship out Saturday to New Jersey to help Hurricane Sandy and Nor’easter storm battered victim s.◆The kicker: Sneed is told New Jersey made an initial request of 250 officers nationally two weeks ago. Then came word the New Jersey State Police got their egos in a bunch that their Emergency Management agency was looking outside the state for help.

“The situation hasn’t changed, but the demand did — so go figure,” said a source familiar with the state’s crisis.

The Ax Man...

A Doghouse at Axelrod’s house?

Not yet...

Top Obama political strategist David Axelrod, who is heading out of politics and off the campaign schedule, is still hoping for a dog.◆Pup pause: But a panting pup will have to wait for a thumbs up from Axelrod’s wife, S usan. ◆Axelrod, who now plans to spend most of his time at the University of Chicago, tells Sneed: “Susan’s waiting to see what post-campaign life is like. Wants to make sure I’ll be around for t he dog!”◆Meanwhile, Axelrod, who won his moustache removal bet with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, is at risk again to shave the brush: He’ll do it if he can raise $1 million for epilepsy research by the end of November. Axelrod’s daughter, Lauren, suffers from the condition and his wife founded CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy.)

The Quinn Bin...

Gov. Pat Quinn’s mother, Eileen, who cast her first vote for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, met President Barack Obama for the first time in the wee morning hours at a “Friends & Family” reception after his re-election.

∞The upshot: Mama Quinn, who was born before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920, wanted to assure the President she voted for him. Obama then told her what she wanted to hear: “Your son is doing a great job.”

Sneedlings ...

Friday’s birthdays: Nick Lachey, 39; Vanessa Lachey, 32, and Lou Ferrigno, 61.
