Wisconsin Democrats fight chain e-mail claiming voters can't wear Obama buttons, T-shirts

September 30, 2008

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Democratic Party is trying to debunk a chain e-mail that warns voters who wear Barack Obama buttons, hats or shirts to the polls will not be allowed to vote.

Democratic Party spokesman Alec Loftus says party activists in Milwaukee and Madison have reported receiving the e-mail, which is spreading on Facebook and across the country.

He sent out a message to thousands of Democrats this week saying the e-mail is false.

Loftus says voters who wear Obama gear will be allowed to vote. He says those who hang around the polling place as observers afterward may be directed to cover up their T-shirts, hats and buttons under Wisconsin rules.
