Delegates back Palin: 'That's what being pro-life is all about'

GOP VP CANDIDATE | Questions about firing official, husband's drunken-driving arrest

September 2, 2008

ST. PAUL -- Republican delegates voiced support Monday for Sarah Palin after the revelation that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was five months pregnant and planning to marry the baby's father.

"The good news is that Bristol felt comfortable talking to her parents about her situation," said Alaska delegate Annette Kreitzer, Palin's commissioner for the Alaska Department of Administration.

The delegates said the news buttressed Palin's image as a champion of family values. That's what being "pro-life" is all about, said Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.).

Some liberal bloggers used the news to hammer Palin. But Barack Obama told his supporters "people's families are off limits, and people's children are especially off limits."

It was also revealed Monday that:

•   •   An attorney has been hired to represent Palin in an ethics probe into whether she dismissed Alaska's public safety chief after he refused to fire a state trooper who had divorced Palin's sister.

•   •   Palin's husband, Todd, was arrested for drunken driving in 1986.

The revelations added to the unscripted nature of the convention.

''Life happens,'' McCain adviser Steve Schmidt said about the pregnancy story.
