Vote fails, so hummus brand to stay at DePaul

Updated: August 30, 2011 12:17AM

DePaul University will not replace Sabra hummus it serves in its cafeterias with another brand.

The plan, placed on the ballot by DePaul’s Student Government Association at the request of Students for Justice in Palestine, received 1,127 votes Friday — short of the needed 1,500.

The group claimed Sabra’s majority owner, the Strauss Group, sends financial support to two Israeli military units accused of human rights abuses.

But according to the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, a referendum asking students whether they want a replacement hummus brand served on campus is in fact part of an effort to eliminate Israel.

The Chicago chapter of the American Jewish Committee applauded the decision to keep Sabra hummus on DePaul’s campuses.
