Teachers in Highland Park end strike

Students and teachers in North Shore District 112 returned to classes Wednesday following an early-morning announcement that a tentative contract settlement had been reached, bringing an end to a one-day strike.
Negotiators began working at noon Tuesday and apparently talked into the early hours of Wednesday before hammering out a tentative deal.
The school district announced the settlement and the reopening of school at 5 a.m. Wednesday. The North Shore Education Association also reported that a tentative agreement had been reached.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support over the past 24 hours,” noted the North Shore Education Association on its website. “We are happy to report that the NSEA and the Board of Education have reached a tentative agreement. Details will be shared with members at a future time. School will be back in session today.”
Teachers called the strike about midnight Monday after a seven-hour negotiating session did not produce a settlement. The district serves about 4,300 pupils in Highland Park, Highwood and Fort Sheridan.
