A man is in custody after he and a teenage boy were playing with a handgun Thursday night and it went off, striking the boy in the arm and side.
The 16-year-old boy and an adult male were “goofing around” with the gun in the 1800 block of East 71st Street about 9:45 p.m. when it went off and hit the boy in his right arm and side, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. Police do not know who was holding the gun when it fired.
The boy was initially taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center before being transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in “stable” condition, police said.
The man is in custody, but charges have not been filed as of Friday morning. Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
