A woman is in custody for a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in northwest suburban Elgin that killed a motorcyclist.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. when Francisco Acevedo, 25, was traveling westbound on Walnut Avenue on a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle, according to a release from Elgin Police spokeswoman Sue Olafson.

He struck a 1999 GMC Suburban as the SUV was turning left onto Walnut Avenue from Mosely Street, the release said.

Acevedo, of the 900 block of Shuler Street in Elgin, was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin where he later died, the release said.

A 48-year-old woman driving the GMC fled the scene of the accident, but witnesses were able to lead police to the vehicle and the driver a few blocks away, the release said. The Elgin woman was also injured in the crash and taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

She is being held on unrelated charges as police investigate the crash.
