The wife of a West Miltmore man who shot her and then apparently shot himself was in stable, but critical, condition Monday.
Gordon Olsen, 52, of the 36000 block of Lawrence Court, Lake Villa Township, died Sunday around 4:30 p.m. after he shot himself once in the head in the kitchen of the home he shared with his 49-year-old wife, Susan, and their 21-year-old son.
Susan was shot in the chest and the head, but was able to make it to the front steps of the home where she called 9-1-1 on her cellphone. Her son also called 9-1-1.
“She was conscious when police got here and she was able to give a statement,” Wayne Hunter, chief of administration for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, said Monday.
The couple had argued about marital problems when Gordon took out a .45-caliber handgun and shot his wife in the chest. A second shot struck her in the head, but it was more of a graze wound. She was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville.
Gordon died of a single gunshot to the head, according to Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.
“They were a very nice people. It was a shock to all of us,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.
