Woman carried baby she killed in BabyBjorn for hours, prosecutors claim

A south suburban woman is accused of killing her 3-month-old baby — and then carrying him around in a BabyBjorn carrier while she went shopping.

Prosecutors allege Toyrianna Smith, 20, beat and suffocated Ken Blackman Jr. Wednesday night because he wouldn’t stop crying.

Smith had been drinking vodka with friends at a Harvey home, and then spent the night with the baby in a guest room, prosecutors said.

Thursday morning, Smith dressed the dead baby, avoided the boy’s father when he came to pick him up, put the boy in the carrier and went shopping, prosecutors said.

She then went to the home of a neighbor, who suspected the baby was not breathing and saw blood on the blanket. The neighbor called 911, and the baby was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, prosecutors allege. He had been dead for eight to 14 hours, authorities said.

Cook County Judge Darron Bowden ordered Smith, 20, held on $1 million bond Monday, according to Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin. She is charged with first-degree murder.
