Man breaks in home, views porn online, rapes woman

Updated: June 12, 2011 12:31AM

Salvador Alvarado broke into a neighbor’s home as she slept following a recent surgery, then quietly used her computer to visit a pornographic website.

After browsing the site for at least 20 minutes, attacked and repeatedly raped the 54-year-old woman, who was recovering from having both of her knees replaced, DuPage County prosecutors said.

Alvarado, 40, of West Chicago, sat Tuesday with his head bowed as he was sentenced Tuesday to 28 years in prison for the Sept. 21, 2008, assault, which left the woman with a fractured vertebra and other injuries.

Alvarado was arrested about two weeks after the attack when he returned to the victim’s home.

The sentence imposed by Judge Kathryn Creswell means Alvardo — who has a history of mental health problems and alcoholism — will spend about 20 years behind bars.

Prosecutors had sought a 50-year prison term for Alvarado, who last month had pleaded guilty but mentally ill to aggravated criminal sexual assault.

“He is incapable of rehabilitation. He cannot control himself,” prosecutor Ann Celine O’Hallaren said.

Alvarado offered a brief apology before he was sentenced, saying because he had been sexually abused as a child, “I know what it is to be raped.”

“I feel really bad for her. I know I caused her harm,” said Alvarado, speaking in court through a translator.
