A firework set off inside an apartment on the West Side sparked a fire that burned a six-month-old girl, police said.
The fire started at 9 p.m. Monday on the second floor of a four-story apartment building on the 700 block of North Central in Austin, fire department officials said.
The fire apparently broke out when a man lit a firework in the apartment during a domestic disturbance, police said. The burned infant was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital in “stable to critical condition,” officials said. The fire was extinguished by 9:45 p.m.
The blaze displaced 36 people.
Johnell Walker, 28, who lives in the apartment, was charged Tuesday with three felony counts of aggravated arson causing bodily harm, police said.
