Chicago Police were questioning a person of interest Wednesday evening in the attempted robbery of an off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s sergeant, according to Officer Veejay Zala, a department spokesman.
The sergeant fatally shot a teenage boy during the robbery attempt Monday night on the Far South Side, police said.
About 9:55 p.m. Monday, three people tried to rob the sergeant as he was pumping gas at a Citgo in the 700 block of East 103rd Street, according to Chicago Police and Cook County Sheriff’s spokesman Ben Breit.
They demanded the sergeant’s wallet, and he gave it to them. One of the suspects pulled out a handgun and aimed it straight at the sergeant, according to Chicago Police. The sergeant pulled out his gun and shot Deonta Mackey, 16, in the head, killing him.
Mackey, of the 900 block of East 104th Street, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:08 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy Tuesday found he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.
The two others with him ran off, police said.
