Harvey police seized an automatic machine gun and several other illegal weapons hidden in a south suburban home following a tip from authorities in Ohio.
Harvey police searched the home near Cooper and 155th about 11 a.m. Thursday, after the homeowner signed a consent form allowing them to search the home, spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado said in a release.
Police found a Romanian AK-47, a Saiga .410 and a Hi-point 9 mm, Alvarado said. They also found a Masterpiece Arms .45 — a type of automatic machine gun — as well as Taurus .44 and Ruger .44 handguns.
Authorities also found more than 500 rounds of ammunition, the release said.
Harvey investigators believe the 54-year-old woman who lived at the home does not own the weapons, and did not know they were in the house, the release said.
They investigated after receiving a tip from police in Marion, Ohio, that illegal weapons were being hidden in the home, Alvarado said.
