A man was dragged from his car and beaten by an angry crowd after hitting two pedestrians with his car Friday night on the South Side, authorities said.
The man was driving about 7:16 p.m. in the 9300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when he struck the two men — one of whom was critically injured.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene had to call police for backup after an angry crowd that gathered at the scene of the accident pulled the driver from his car and beat him, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Juan Hernandez said.
“People got unruly, dragged the driver out of the car and assaulted him,” Hernandez said.
One of the men struck by the car was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Fire Media Affairs.
The driver and the other man wer taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.
Police could not say whether any arrests were made as a result of the fracas.
