A 13-year-old boy was shot in the back Monday afternoon in the Englewoood neighborhood.
He was shot about 3:15 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Halsted Street, police said.
Paramedics took him to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.
Pastor Corey Brooks, of New Beginnings Church, said Monday night that the boy was in a mentor program sponsored by his church. Brooks was with the boy and his family at the hospital but said they did not want to speak to the media.
Earlier in the evening Brooks tweeted: “My heart is broken I found out that our boys were being picked up and the shooting happen five min before they arrived to pick up the boys.”
Area South detectives are investigating. No one was in custody.
