An 83-year-old Des Plaines woman who died after hitting her head in a fall was trying to break up a fight between her daughter and granddaughter, police in the northwest suburb say.

Betty Knaack hit her head on a wooden chair around 5 p.m. Monday, police say.

Her daughter, Susan Searls, told officers it happened when Knaack tried to break up a fight between her and her 33-year-old daughter, Lynn Bingaman.

Knaack remained conscious and was taken to Resurrection Medical Center, where she died Thursday.

Prosecutors say Bingaman pushed Knaack, who hit her head.

Bingaman, also of Des Plaines, initially was charged with aggravated domestic battery. On Friday, after Knaack’s death was ruled a homicide, Bingaman was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bail.
