Chicago man charged with transporting child porn: feds

A Chicago man was arrested by federal authorities Tuesday and charged with possession of hundreds of images of child pornography.

Authorities executing a search warrant arrested Thomas Richardson, 58 and charged him with transporting child pornography, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office.

A computer found in Richardson’s home contained hundreds of images and a least a dozen videos of suspected child pornography, according to court documents. He lived alone at a home on Parkside Avenue.

Richardson is accused of using file-sharing to trade child porn on a home computer, according to federal prosecutors. A Homeland Security agent investigating child porn was searching a file-sharing network for computers with files known to be pornography, according to court documents.

Investigators learned that Richardson’s computer was used to download three files known to contain child pornography from July 29-31, according to court documents.

Richardson appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Rowland, who ordered him to remain in federal custody pending a Thursday detention hearing, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Transporting child pornography carries a mandatory sentence of 15 to 40 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to prosecutors.
