Man shot near CPS Safe Passage route on West Side

A 19-year-old man was shot Tuesday evening about a block from a Safe Passage route to a Humboldt Park elementary school.

He was shot in the right leg about 5:15 p.m. in the 3700 block of West Ohio, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Paramedics took him to Stroger Hospital, Alfaro said.

The shooting happened about two hours after school let out on the second day of classes for Chicago Public Schools students, and about a block from a Safe Passage route leading to nearby Laura S. Ward Elementary School.

Ward is a welcoming school for students from Ryerson Elementary, one of 47 CPS elementary schools closed earlier this year.

Police were questioning a “person of interest” in connection with the shooting, but no charges had been filed as of Tuesday night.

Area North detectives were investigating.
