Man found beaten in Englewood trash can identified

A man who was beaten to death and found in a garbage can Monday morning in the Englewood neighborhood has been identified.

Ernest Pritchett III, 51, was dead at the scene in the 700 block of West 61st Street, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. His home address was not yet known Tuesday evening, a medical examiner’s office spokesman said.

Streets and Sanitation workers found his body while collecting trash about 10 a.m. Monday in an alley, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan said.

An autopsy on Tuesday showed that he had died of multiple blunt-force injuries from a beating, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled the death a homicide.

The body was found only a block away from one of the Chicago Public Schools’ Safe Passage routes and about four blocks from Nicholson Technology Academy at 6006 S. Peoria St.

Area South detectives were investigating.
