Police: suspect in custody for South Chicago murder

Police are questioning an 18-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting Sunday afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Telkia Burns was shot and killed about 3:05 p.m. during a robbery in the vestibule of a building in the 2900 block of East 91st Street, police said. The robber apparently walked up to the 33-year-old Burns, pulled out a gun and demanded his belongings, police said.

In a scuffle that followed, the robber shot Burns, of the 9100 block of South Commercial Avenue, in the head, police said.

Burns was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died at 4:05 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Charges are pending against the 18-year-old man in custody, police said. Area South detectives continued to investigate Monday morning.
