Bond set at $1.5 million for gang member charged with killing rival

A gang member charged with murdering a rival in Humboldt Park last month was ordered held in lieu of $1.5 million bail Wednesday.

Two witnesses eating ice cream in a car saw Carlos Rivera pull up, get out of his vehicle and shoot Fernando Sanchez, who was his cellphone in the doorway of his apartment building in the 3700 block of West Le Moyne, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Heather Kent said.

Rivera, 18, an admitted member of the Latin Kings, said “DK” — short for “Disciple Killer” — before he opened fire with his silver semi-automatic handgun in the July 13 incident, Kent said. Sanchez, 25, was initially shot once in the chest.

But as he turned to run, Rivera, of the 3900 block of West Wrightwood, shot Sanchez two more times in the back, authorities said.

Rivera goes by the street name “Scrappy,” according to a police report. He has held construction jobs and helped his parents campaign for various local politicians, a defense attorney said.
