Two northwest suburban men were charged in the fatal shooting of a man who was standing next to an alleged gang member they were targeting Wednesday night in Wheeling.

Jesus Sanchez, 18, of Arlington Heights, and Collin Scheffler, 19, of Prospect Heights were charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, Wheeling Police said.

Sanchez was ordered held in lieu of $2 million bail, and Scheffler’s bond was set at $500,000, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. They are both scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday in Rolling Meadows.

At 9 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to the Winetree Apartment Complex in the 400 block of Pleasant Run Drive in Wheeling, police said. They found a man with a gunshot wound in his chest. Rafael A. Orozco, 23, of the 500 block of Pleasant Run Drive, was pronounced dead at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview at 9:50 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

An autopsy Thursday found Orozco suffered a fatal gunshot to the back and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Sanchez and Scheffler, allegedly admitted their plan to murder a rival gang member with whom they had several previous confrontations that day, police said. The rival gang member was standing near Orozco at the time of the shooting, police said.
