Two teenagers have been charged in the deadly shooting of a man who police say was standing next to the pair’s intended target in northwest suburban Wheeling.
Jesus Sanchez, 18, of Arlington Heights, and Collin Scheffler, 19, of Prospect Heights, were charged with Rafael A. Orozco’s murder and attempted murder.
Wheeling officers found 23-year-old Orozco at the Winetree Apartment Complex Wednesday night after they responded to a call of shots fired in the 400 block of Pleasant Run Drive, police said.
Orozco, who lived in the apartment complex, was shot in the back, according to authorities.
Sanchez, a self-admitted gang member, and Scheffler, the driver of the vehicle, allegedly admitted their plan to murder a rival gang member who they had several previous confrontations with that day, police said.
The rival gang member was standing near Orozco at the time of the shooting, police said.
