Joliet man set own house on fire: fire official

A southwest suburban man admitted setting the fire that destroyed his house in Joliet early Wednesday, authorities said.

Joliet Police Cmdr. Brian Benton said officers were on patrol about 12:30 a.m. when they saw flames coming from the home.

“They notified the fire department and saw a man outside. They feared he had been charred by the fire, but it turned out he was covered in black paint,” Benton said.

Joliet Fire Battalion Chief Laroy Aldridge said firefighters arrived to find fire coming through the roof of the one-story house.

“The man admitted to firefighters he’d started it,” Aldridge said.

The structure was a total loss, officials said. Firefighters were on the scene until 3 a.m.

No one was hurt. The 51-year-old man, who was not arrested, was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for observation.

The fire was under investigation.
