Demonte Yanders
Long before Gary Police Patrolman Demonte Yanders was arrested on charges of assaulting Tiffany Swagerty, he arrested her.
Yanders, 29, was charged with several felonies last week after Swagerty, 30, accused him of choking and beating her during an argument at her home in Glen Park.
He has been reassigned to non-police duties while the criminal case is pending. His initial hearing in Lake Superior Court is set for April 8.
On Oct. 18, 2011, Yanders encountered Swagerty at 21st Avenue and Virginia Street. She had argued with a woman who was dating the father of her children, telling the other woman to stay away from her kids, the police report states.
When Yanders and another officer arrived, Swagerty admitted pulling the woman out of her car and striking her. Swagerty was charged with misdemeanor battery in Gary City Court.
Swagerty is on probation and set to appear for a status hearing on May 1.
Yanders is out of jail after posting a $4,000 bond. He joined the Gary Police force in 2009.
