1 killed, eight wounded in Chicago weekend violence

One person was killed and at least 8 others were wounded in weekend gun violence across Chicago, including two men who were critically injured Sunday in separate shootings in the Little Village neighborhood.
The most recent shooting happened about 11:23 p.m. Sunday in the South Lawndale neighborhood, police said. A 37-year-old man was shot in the stomach and suffered a graze wound in his head when someone opened fire in the 2800 block of South Christiana, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Earlier Sunday evening, a 19-year-old was in serious condition after he was shot in his neck about 8:30 p.m. in the 9200 block of South Essex in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, police said.
About 4:28 p.m. Sunday in the Little Village neighborhood, a 30-year-old man was shot in the head near Kedvale and 30th. The man was walking down the street when a gunman emerged from a gangway, shouted gang slogans and opened fire, police said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
On Sunday morning in the same neighborhood, a 22-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting about 7:55 a.m. The man was driving in the 2700 block of West 24th Place when a man in a small black car pulled up alongside him and opened fire, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. The victim was struck in the face and back, and the shooter, who was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, fled in his car.
The gunshot victim drove to the 2400 block of South California Avenue, where he got out of his vehicle crying for help in front of Assumption B.V.M. Church, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said. No arrests had been made in either of the Little Village shootings, which Area Central detectives were investigating.
The weekend’s only fatal shooting happened Friday night in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. About 8:30 p.m., police found Manuel Hernandez, 21, lying in a hallway of his apartment building in the 3900 block of North Central with a gunshot wound in his chest. He was taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, where he died a short time later, authorities said.
About 11:30 p.m. Friday, two men were shot as they walked in the 5200 block of South California in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said. One of the men, age 19, was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The other man, age 20, was shot in the side and taken to Stroger Hospital. Neither was seriously injured, police said.
About 5 a.m. Saturday, a woman in her 20s was shot in the foot in the 1600 block of South Kedvale in the Lawndale neighborhood the West Side, police said.
About 7 p.m. Saturday a man thought to be in his 50s was shot in his chest in the 5400 block of South Sawyer in Gage Park. He was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.
