A Mount Prospect man was ordered held Saturday on $250,000 bail on two counts of aggravated domestic battery, accused of choking and severely beating his girlfriend, who prosecutors said suffered a lacerated liver in the attack near Palatine on Tuesday.

Joseph L. Lopez, 34, a mechanic, and his girlfriend of two years were in a car outside Palatine when he grabbed her arms and struck her with his fists and her own purse, according to Cook County prosecutors, who said he then choked her until she lost consciousness and grabbed her hair so hard that he pulled pieces of hair from her scalp.

When she regained consciousness, he started choking her again, telling her he was going to either kill her or bury her alive, and slamming her head into the car’s console, prosecutors said. They said she told authorities he also told her that after killing her, he would dissolve her body in chemicals and dump her remains.

Authorities said he finally let the woman go when she promised she wouldn’t break up with him.

She then drove to a hospital and was treated for multiple injuries, including the injured liver, prosecutors said.
