Months before he was charged with breaking into a River West woman’s home and sexually assaulting her, a Lincoln Park man allegedly snuck into the apartments of three other North Side victims, stealing the driver’s license of one and taking inappropriate pictures of the others as they slept.
A woman who had some of her clothing allegedly taken off by Derrick Baldwin and then had her bare buttocks photographed didn’t even know she had been targeted until Chicago Police contacted her last month and told her that an image of her electric bill with her personal information was found on Baldwin’s cell phone, assistant Cook County state’s attorney Stephanie Buck said Thursday.
Pictures of the Lincoln Park woman’s nude buttocks also were found on Baldwin’s cell from the Oct. 6 incident in the 1600 block of North LaSalle, Buck said.
Two months before on Aug. 15, Baldwin allegedly went into a River North apartment around 5:15 a.m. and took pictures of another woman’s bare legs and blue shorts as she slept.
At some point the woman woke up, walked out of her bedroom, saw Baldwin standing in the hallway and began screaming, prompting her attacker to leave the residence, in the first block of East Ontario, Buck said.
Three days later, Baldwin allegedly went inside another River North apartment, in the 500 block of North Dearborn.
There, Baldwin, 33, was spotted opening the door to a bedroom by a young woman who had been sleeping on a couch, Buck said.
Even when the woman looked in Baldwin’s direction, he continued to make his way toward her roommate’s bedroom, according to a police report. But when the woman sat up, Baldwin “calmly” exited the premises, the report said.
After Baldwin fled, the woman who had been on the couch saw that her purse had been repositioned and looked inside to find her driver’s license missing, Buck said.
Surveillance cameras at all three buildings allegedly caught Baldwin coming in and out of the premises and the two victims from the summer incidents identified him in a line-up, Buck said.
The missing driver’s license and cell phone pictures of the others were recovered after Baldwin was arrested in November for allegedly sexually assaulting another woman as she slept in the 500 block of West Kinzie. He was ordered then held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
That woman in the Oct. 28 attack said she went to bed alone with her underwear on and woke up with her underwear off and Baldwin in her bed, under the covers with his head between her legs.
On Thursday, Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Baldwin, of the 2200 block of North Halsted, held in lieu of $500,000 bail for his three new cases.
He faces criminal sexual abuse, residential burglary and home invasion charges.
Baldwin, who has children with a girlfriend, is a college graduate and was enrolled in ROTC during high school, an assistant public defender said.
He has several out of state felony convictions for burglary and criminal trespass.
