A man in his 50s was shot to death in the Woodlawn neighborhood just before 6 p.m. in what may have been a drive-by shooting, police said. He was the eighth person to be killed in violence in the city this weekend.
“It’s scary,” said a woman who lives in an apartment building near the shooting in the 6600 block of South Blackstone. She said she heard about nine shots. “Me and my son got on the floor and turned off the lights until we heard police sirens, then we got back up,” said the woman, who asked not to be named.
“We cut the lights because we didn’t want whoever was shooting to look up and think the people in this apartment saw what happened,” said the woman’s teenage son.
The man suffered a gunshot wound in his head and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
From Friday night through Sunday evening, seven men were shot to death, one was stabbed to death and 29 people — including seven teenagers — were wounded across the city this weekend.
Earlier Sunday, also on the South Side, a 17-year-old boy was shot in his lower back about 5:16 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Emerald, police said.
At 1:15 p.m., a 15-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound in his abdomen in the 8300 block of South Kingston. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.
About 12:50 a.m., a 20-year-old woman was shot in a drive-by in the West Side Austin neighborhood. She was sitting in an SUV parked at Laramie and Chicago when a dark-color sedan drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. She was shot in the back of her right leg and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in “stable” condition.
Less than two hours earlier, two people shot two men in a South Shore club Saturday night, then shot a woman down the street as they were running away, police said.
Both shooters walked into the club in the 1400 block of East 75th Street about 10:45 p.m. and opened fire on the patrons inside, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
Two men, both 20, were shot inside the club, Alfaro said. The shooters ran out, but started firing again in the 7500 block of South Blackston Ave, leaving a woman shot in both legs and her buttocks.
They fled and are not in police custody early Sunday, Alfaro said.
The woman, 26, was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said.
One man suffered a gunshot wound in his left hand and a graze wound in his back; the other man had gunshot wounds in his shoulder and leg, police said. Both were taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The first fatal shooting of the weekend happened at 6:20 p.m. Friday in the 4200 block of South Wells. William Lee Martin, 30, of Springfield, was shot by an assailant who emerged from a vacant lot and opened fire at some men gathered on a porch. A bullet went through a window of the building, striking Martin and leaving three other men wounded, the police said.
