Former Barrington High School employee charged with theft

The former fine arts chairwoman of a north suburban high school has been charged with theft for allegedly stealing more than $5,000 in theater ticket and raffle proceeds from a student musical.
Julie Rachel Salk, former chair of the Barrington High School Fine Arts Department, was arrested last week and charged with one count of theft over $500, a Class 3 felony, according to Barrington police.
Salk allegedly stole about $5,022 in theater ticket and raffle ticket revenue from the school’s March production of the musical “Hello Dolly,” according to police. Salk was responsible for administering Fine Arts Department expenses, but retired in June after the school started investigating revenue discrepancies.
A fellow employee alerted school district officials in April of suspicious financial management practices by Salk, according to the release. Police were notified and worked with school district officials on the investigation.
The charges involve only the spring musical, but an investigation of ticket revenue and financial transactions from other school fine arts events handled by Salk is pending, according to police.
Salk turned herself in Friday after a warrant was issued on Nov. 8, police said. She was released after posting 10 percent of a $10,000 bond.
A letter with Tuesday’s date posted on the Barrington School District 220 website from District Superintendent Tom Leonard said Salk retired from the district after 20 years of service, and that no benefits or severance were provided upon her departure.
