Three UIC students were robbed at gunpoint early Saturday about a block from the school’s Near West Side campus.
The students told University of Illinois-Chicago police they were walking about 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of West Vernon Park Place when they noticed someone following, so they began to walk at a faster pace, according to an alert from police.
The robber caught up, displayed a silver handgun and demanded their property. The victims complied and the suspect ran away, the alert said. The students were not injured.
Chicago and UIC Police searched the area but did not find the offender. He was described as a black man 20-25, 5-foot-4 and 120 pounds, wearing a blue skull cap and black leather jacket.
Anyone with information should call UIC Police at (312) 996-2830.
Police are advising students to travel in groups, particularly after dark, use well-lit walkways, and know the location of the nearest emergency call box.
