Police shoot man who allegedly pointed gun at officers

Police shot one man in the chest and took two others into custody after responding to a report of shots fired in the Englewood neighborhood early Thursday, authorities said.
Officers with the Englewood District’s incident team arrived at the 6700 block of South Morgan Street about 2:15 a.m. and saw a vehicle speed off into an alley, according to a statement from police News Affairs.
Officers followed the car until it pulled over and the driver bolted from the car, said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.
A foot chase ensued until the driver allegedly turned around and pointed a handgun at the officers, authorities said.
An officer fired his gun and struck the driver, the police statement said. The driver was hit at least once in the chest, Camden said.
The man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, though his condition is not known.
No officers were injured, the police statement said.
Police arrested two males who were sitting in the backseat of the car, Camden said. Their ages were not immediately available.
Camden said a semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
Investigators with the Independent Police Review Authority, which probes police-involved shootings, were heading to the scene early Thursday to collect details, said agency spokesman Larry Merritt.
